Jackson, Miss. – Sweltering heat and dangerous humidity have settled over Mississippi, Arkansas, and north Louisiana, pushing heat index values up to a staggering 120 degrees Wednesday and prompting an Extreme Heat Warning for nearly the entire region through 8 p.m. CDT.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, dangerously hot and humid conditions will persist until this evening, threatening widespread heat-related illnesses. Cities from Jackson, Greenville, and Hattiesburg in Mississippi to Lake Village, Arkansas, and Monroe, Louisiana, are under alert, with peak heat expected in the early afternoon. Area hospitals and emergency responders urge residents to avoid outdoor activity and check on elderly neighbors.

Travelers and commuters should expect slowdowns and delays, as some roadways and public transit systems may limit operations due to the heat. School districts across central and south Mississippi are shifting outdoor activities indoors or canceling practices altogether. Utility companies are on alert for higher demand; residents are urged to conserve power where possible.

To stay safe, drink plenty of water, remain in air-conditioned spaces, and never leave children or pets in vehicles—even briefly. Limit strenuous activity to the morning or evening, and know the symptoms of heat exhaustion: heavy sweating, dizziness, and nausea require immediate action.

This extreme heat is expected to break after sunset, but warnings may be extended if temperatures remain elevated. Updates will follow if conditions change.
