Natchez, Mississippi – A single spark could trigger fast-moving grass or brush fires by 9 a.m. Sunday as strong north winds and dry air combine to create explosive fire growth conditions across southwest Mississippi and parts of northeast Louisiana.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday for Adams, Franklin, Jefferson, Lawrence and Lincoln counties in Mississippi, along with Catahoula and Concordia parishes in Louisiana. North winds will range from 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph. Relative humidity will drop as low as 20 to 25 percent, drying out vegetation and increasing ignition risk.

Communities including Natchez, Brookhaven, Monticello and Vidalia face the greatest concern during peak afternoon winds. Open fields and wooded areas near U.S. 84, U.S. 61 and rural parish roads could see flames spread quickly if ignited by debris burning, equipment sparks or discarded cigarettes.

Officials strongly discourage outdoor burning and urge residents to secure trailer chains, avoid parking vehicles on dry grass and report smoke immediately to 911. Conditions are expected to ease after sunset as winds diminish, but fire crews remain on alert through early evening, and additional advisories could follow if dry weather continues.
