Parts of Mississippi and northeast Louisiana remain under a Cold Weather Advisory early Tuesday as dangerously low wind chills continue through the morning hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, wind chill values are expected to fall below 20 degrees across south central, southeast, and southwest Mississippi, as well as portions of northeast Louisiana. The advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. CST Tuesday.

Affected areas include communities such as Hattiesburg, Laurel, Brookhaven, Natchez, Columbia, Prentiss, Monticello, Ferriday, Vidalia, and West Hattiesburg, among others. Cold northwest winds are contributing to the low wind chill values, increasing the risk of cold-related health impacts.

The National Weather Service warns that prolonged exposure to these conditions can lead to hypothermia, especially for individuals without adequate cold-weather clothing. Children, older adults, outdoor workers, and individuals without reliable heating are particularly vulnerable.

Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, wear layered clothing, including hats and gloves, and ensure pets and livestock have warm, dry shelter with unfrozen water. Officials also advise checking on elderly neighbors and family members during the cold conditions.

The advisory is expected to expire later this morning as temperatures gradually rise, but residents should continue to monitor forecasts in case additional cold weather alerts are issued.
