Jackson, Mississippi – Dangerously high heat index values are putting residents in northwest Mississippi at risk of heat-related illness Friday, with maximum readings reaching up to 110°F in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, Elevated (Level 2) heat stress conditions will persist throughout the day in counties including Greenville, Greenwood, Hamburg, and Bastrop. These areas are seeing heat indices between 105°F and 110°F, with actual air temperatures in the mid-90s. Prolonged outdoor exposure could lead to heat exhaustion or more severe illness.
In surrounding areas such as Yazoo City and the northern outskirts of Vicksburg and Jackson, a Limited (Level 1) advisory is in effect. Here, heat indices may approach 105°F, posing fatigue risks, especially for those working or exercising outside.
Drivers are urged not to leave people or pets in vehicles under any circumstances. Residents should stay hydrated, limit strenuous activity, and check on vulnerable neighbors or relatives.
Heat stress levels are expected to remain elevated until at least sunset Friday. Further advisories may be issued if temperatures stay high into the weekend.
