Jackson, Mississippi – Mississippi residents are facing a dangerous heat wave this week as temperatures climb into the upper 90s with heat indices nearing 110°F across much of the state through Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, an Elevated (Level 2) heat stress advisory is in effect for western and central Mississippi, including cities like Jackson, Vicksburg, and Greenville. These areas are expected to experience highs in the mid to upper 90s and heat indices ranging from 106°F to 110°F—conditions that make heat exhaustion likely during prolonged outdoor activity.

Eastern parts of the state, including Meridian, Philadelphia, and Columbus, are under a Limited (Level 1) advisory, with slightly lower heat indices near 105°F but still enough to pose a risk, especially for the elderly, children, and outdoor workers.

Health officials urge Mississippians to avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours, stay hydrated, and never leave children or pets in vehicles. Residents are also advised to check on neighbors and monitor for signs of heat illness such as dizziness, rapid heartbeat, or confusion.

The excessive heat risk will persist through Thursday, with possible updates or expansions to advisories expected midweek.
