Jackson, Miss. – Large portions of Mississippi are facing dangerous heat stress conditions through early next week, with heat indices climbing between 105 and 110 degrees. The National Weather Service warns that prolonged outdoor activity could quickly lead to heat exhaustion, especially in the western half of the state.
According to the NWS Jackson office, Level 2 Elevated heat stress will cover cities including Vicksburg, Greenwood, and Yazoo City, where temperatures will reach the mid to upper 90s and feel significantly hotter due to humidity. Eastern areas, including Meridian and Philadelphia, are under a Level 1 Limited risk, with lower to middle 90s expected and heat indices approaching 105 degrees.
Officials urge residents to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor work, and never leave children or pets in vehicles. Vulnerable groups such as the elderly, outdoor workers, and those without air conditioning face the highest health risks.
The heat threat will persist through at least Tuesday, with minimal overnight cooling expected. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
