Jackson, Mississippi – Extreme heat and humidity are gripping central Mississippi to start the week, with dangerous heat stress conditions expected west of I-55 through Monday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, areas including Vicksburg, Yazoo City, and Greenville are under a Level 2 Elevated Heat Stress advisory. Temperatures will climb into the mid-90s, with heat index values between 105°F and 110°F, especially during peak afternoon hours. Prolonged outdoor activity in these areas could lead to heat exhaustion or illness.
Counties along and west of I-55—including Warren, Washington, Issaquena, and parts of Leflore—face the highest risk. Meanwhile, cities like Jackson and Brookhaven are under a Level 1 Limited advisory, with slightly lower temps but still oppressive humidity. Relief may arrive by late afternoon, as scattered thunderstorms develop east of I-55 and move across the region into the evening hours.
Officials urge residents to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets. Never leave children or animals in vehicles, even briefly.
Heat advisories remain in effect until sunset. Additional warnings could be issued if conditions worsen.
