Jackson, Mississippi – Extreme summer heat is returning to Mississippi, with heat index values soaring to 110 degrees in parts of the state through Sunday. Residents in Jackson, Meridian, and southern counties should prepare for dangerous conditions, especially by Friday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a heat stress advisory remains in effect as high temperatures climb into the middle 90s and heat indices approach 110°F. The elevated risk (Level 2) is forecast for areas including Brookhaven, Natchez, and Hattiesburg from Friday through Sunday. Prolonged outdoor activity could quickly lead to heat exhaustion or illness.

By late week, central and southern counties—such as Rankin, Copiah, and Simpson—will see the highest risk, with fatigue and heat-related illnesses possible for anyone working or exercising outside. The Mississippi Department of Transportation urges drivers never to leave people or pets in vehicles and to watch for workers on roadways.

Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities during peak heat, wear light clothing, stay hydrated, and check on neighbors without air conditioning. Schools and summer camps may adjust outdoor schedules, especially in affected counties.

Heat advisories may be extended or upgraded if dangerous conditions persist through the weekend. Watch for updates from NWS Jackson and local emergency agencies.
