Jackson, Miss. – Mississippians from the Delta to the Pine Belt should brace for sweltering conditions Friday, as heat index values soar past 105 degrees in a broad stretch of the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Heat Advisory remains in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT Friday for central, north-central, southern, and western Mississippi, as well as parts of southeast Arkansas and northeast Louisiana. Cities impacted include Jackson, Hattiesburg, Greenville, Vicksburg, Brookhaven, Canton, and Columbia.

Outdoor workers and vulnerable groups are at increased risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially during peak afternoon hours. Residents are urged to limit strenuous activity, stay hydrated, and seek air-conditioned spaces. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent breaks in shade for those working outside.

Local hospitals and emergency services could see increased heat-related calls. This early summer surge echoes similar conditions seen in June 2022, when Jackson-area temperatures pushed ER visits above average.

More heat alerts may follow this weekend if conditions persist. Stay tuned to local emergency management and NWS updates.
