Jackson, Mississippi – Outdoor burning could turn dangerous within hours Saturday as dry air and gusty winds combine to rapidly spread any fires across central and southern Mississippi.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, an elevated Level 2 fire danger will develop late Saturday morning and persist through the afternoon. Winds could gust between 25 and 35 mph behind a cold front, while low humidity creates conditions where fires can ignite easily and spread quickly beyond control.
The highest concern stretches from Vicksburg and Jackson east toward Meridian, including communities along I-20 and I-55 where roadside sparks or debris could trigger fast-moving grass fires. In south Mississippi, including Hattiesburg and Brookhaven, similar conditions may allow flames to expand across dry vegetation during peak heating hours.
Officials strongly discourage outdoor burning and urge residents to follow local burn bans. Even small ignition sources like trailer chains or discarded cigarettes could start fires under these conditions.
The risk will begin to ease after sunset, but fire-prone conditions could return if dry weather continues into early next week.
