Jackson, MS – Mississippi residents should prepare for gusty winds and an elevated wildfire threat today, with conditions expected to persist from the morning through early afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, sustained winds of 20-25 mph with gusts reaching 30-35 mph could cause tree limbs to break and create hazardous conditions for high-profile vehicles. These strong winds, combined with dry conditions, have also heightened the risk of wildfires, particularly in western and central parts of the state.

Areas west of I-55, including Jackson, Vicksburg, and Natchez, are under an “elevated threat” for wildfire danger, meaning fires could spread quickly. The eastern region, including Philadelphia and Meridian, faces a “limited threat,” requiring extra caution with open burning. Officials urge residents to heed local burn bans, properly dispose of cigarettes, and avoid dragging trailer chains on roadways.

Skies will remain mostly sunny, with temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s. Residents should stay alert for changing conditions and take necessary precautions against wind-related hazards and fire risks.
