Jackson, MS – An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect for central and northwest Mississippi as temperatures are forecast to soar, putting residents at risk for heat-related illnesses on Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, an Extreme Heat Warning is set from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with heat index values expected to reach up to 115 degrees. The warning covers a broad area including Cleveland, Indianola, Ruleville, Greenwood, and surrounding communities across portions of north central and northwest Mississippi.
The National Weather Service warns that dangerously hot conditions combined with high humidity can significantly increase the likelihood of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Officials advise drinking plenty of fluids, remaining in air-conditioned environments, and avoiding direct sunlight whenever possible.
Residents are reminded to check on relatives and neighbors, especially older adults and those without air conditioning. Authorities strongly caution against leaving children or pets in vehicles, noting that car interiors can reach lethal temperatures within minutes.
Individuals working or spending time outdoors are urged to take extra precautions. Recommended actions include wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and scheduling strenuous activities for early morning or evening hours. The National Weather Service also urges immediate action at the first sign of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
This latest advisory follows a heat advisory that expired Monday evening. The continued period of extreme heat underscores the need for preparedness and vigilance as Mississippi faces another day of potentially dangerous temperatures.
