HELENA-WEST HELENA, Ark. – Residents in eastern Arkansas and the Mississippi Delta should brace for a sweltering Thursday, with heat index values expected to reach 106 degrees between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. The dangerous combination of high temperatures and humidity could quickly lead to heat-related illnesses.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, the advisory covers Phillips County in Arkansas along with Coahoma, Quitman, Tallahatchie, and Tunica counties in Mississippi. Outdoor workers, seniors, and those without air conditioning will be especially at risk during peak afternoon heat.
Officials urge residents to stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces, drink plenty of water, and avoid strenuous activities during the afternoon hours. People are also encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbors, particularly the elderly and those living alone.
Cooling centers are expected to be available in several county facilities, and residents should contact local emergency management offices for locations and hours. The heat threat will ease after sunset but could return later this week if high humidity persists.
