Greenville, Mississippi – Strong winds sweeping across the Mississippi Delta Sunday could cause travel issues before a potential hard freeze threatens crops and vegetation early this week.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Wind Advisory remains in effect from 10 a.m. Sunday until 7 p.m. Monday for parts of northwest Mississippi, northeast Louisiana, and southeast Arkansas. Southerly winds between 20 and 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected Sunday before shifting to the northwest while maintaining similar strength into Monday.

Communities including Greenville, Cleveland, Greenwood, Indianola, Crossett, Lake Village, Bastrop, and Tallulah may see the strongest winds through Sunday afternoon and evening. Drivers on U.S. Highway 82, U.S. Highway 65, and Highway 1 along the Mississippi River could experience strong crosswinds, especially on bridges and open rural stretches.

Behind the windy conditions, colder air will push into the region. A Freeze Watch is in effect from Monday evening through Tuesday morning, when temperatures could drop to around 23°F in some areas.

That level of cold could damage early spring crops and sensitive plants across the Delta. Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items during the windy conditions and prepare to protect vegetation ahead of the potential freeze early Tuesday.
