Memphis, TN – A sweltering heatwave is gripping the Mid-South, with dangerous conditions continuing through the weekend and into Monday. The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for portions of East Arkansas, North Mississippi, and West Tennessee, including Memphis, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, with heat index values potentially reaching 111°F.

According to the National Weather Service, this dangerous heat will follow a Heat Advisory currently in effect until 8 p.m. Sunday, which has already seen heat indices topping 109°F. These extreme conditions are expected to worsen by Monday, significantly raising the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, and people with pre-existing health conditions.

Residents in cities like Memphis, Jackson, and Southaven should avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours, drink plenty of fluids, and seek air-conditioned spaces. Local authorities are advising everyone to stay out of direct sunlight and to regularly check on neighbors and relatives, particularly those without air conditioning.

Roadways and public areas are likely to see reduced foot traffic due to the oppressive heat, but drivers should still remain cautious as asphalt can reach dangerously high temperatures, affecting both vehicles and pedestrians. Local schools, already under summer break, could face closure if the heat worsens.

Stay tuned for further updates as more advisories may be issued depending on how the heat intensifies. Warnings are expected to remain in effect through Monday night.
