Memphis, Tenn. – Residents across northern Mississippi and western Tennessee remain under a tornado watch until 4 a.m. Saturday as a line of severe storms tracks east through the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, Tornado Watch 270 covers 18 counties in Mississippi and 7 in Tennessee, including the cities of Tupelo, Oxford, Corinth, Jackson, and Selmer. The primary threats include tornadoes, damaging winds over 60 mph, and large hail.
In Mississippi, counties under the watch include Lafayette, Lee, Itawamba, and Panola, while in Tennessee, it includes Madison, McNairy, and Hardeman. Those in mobile homes or vulnerable structures should prepare to seek shelter immediately.
This storm system arrives with a history of producing tornado warnings across Arkansas and the Mid-South earlier Friday night. Winds could cause scattered tree damage and brief power outages.
The tornado watch remains in effect until 4 a.m. CDT. Additional warnings may follow if storms intensify.
