New Orleans, LA – A Red Flag Warning has been issued for Thursday across much of Southeast Louisiana and Southern Mississippi due to dangerous fire weather conditions. The National Weather Service warns of high winds and low humidity, increasing the risk of rapidly spreading wildfires.
According to the National Weather Service in New Orleans, the warning will be in effect from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT Thursday. Winds are expected to reach 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph, while relative humidity levels may drop as low as 20 percent. These conditions create an environment where any fire that develops could spread quickly and become difficult to control.
The affected areas include Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Gulfport, along with multiple parishes and counties spanning Pointe Coupee, East and West Feliciana, St. Helena, Washington, Tangipahoa, St. Tammany, and Terrebonne in Louisiana, as well as Wilkinson, Amite, Pike, Walthall, Pearl River, Hancock, Harrison, and Jackson in Mississippi.
Officials strongly advise against outdoor burning and urge residents to take extra precautions. Any sparks from outdoor equipment, discarded cigarettes, or unattended fires could ignite rapidly under these conditions.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed and follow updates from local emergency management agencies. If a fire starts, report it immediately to local authorities.
