Mobile, AL – Beachgoers along the Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida Panhandle coasts are being urged to use caution today as moderate rip current risks continue across the northern Gulf, according to the National Weather Service in Mobile.

The moderate threat remains through tonight for beaches from Dauphin Island and Gulf Shores to Pensacola, Navarre, and Destin. The risk is expected to ease by Sunday, dropping to low levels through Columbus Day as surf conditions calm.

According to the National Weather Service, rip currents can quickly become life-threatening, even in moderate conditions. Swimmers are advised to stay close to lifeguards, avoid swimming alone, and be aware of surf flags and posted advisories.

“If caught in a rip current, relax and float—do not fight the current,” officials said. “Swim parallel to the shoreline to escape, and wave or yell for help if you can’t get out.”

Forecasters expect calmer seas early next week but urge visitors to check daily beach forecasts at weather.gov/mob before entering the water.
