Indianapolis, IN – A 65-year-old driver is thankful to be alive after his vehicle left the road at 79th and Meridian, traveled approximately 500 feet through a wooded area, hit two trees, and landed wheels down in Williams Creek near the bridge.

According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, the incident occurred at 5:35 PM on Sunday. Firefighters arrived on the scene, originally dispatched for a possible vehicle accident with entrapment and requested Water Rescue Task Force 14 and 7.

Upon arrival, the task force secured the vehicle with a tether to prevent it from moving downstream in the swift current. The driver was alert and oriented. Within 10 minutes of arrival, the task force extracted the victim from the vehicle, placed him onto a stokes basket, and carried him up the hill through the woods to awaiting medics. He was transported to St. Vincent in stable condition by Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services (IEMS). Witnesses informed firefighters that the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed before leaving the road.
