Duluth, MN – A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for parts of central Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin, where heavy snow is expected from Tuesday afternoon through early Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Duluth.
The warning covers Crow Wing, Pine, South Aitkin, South Cass, and Burnett Counties, including the cities of Brainerd, Aitkin, Pine City, Hinckley, and Grantsburg, and the Tribal Lands of the Mille Lacs Band and St. Croix Band.
Forecasters say snow will begin around midday Tuesday in Minnesota, spreading into northwestern Wisconsin by late afternoon. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 6 inches are expected, with localized totals up to 8 inches possible in heavier bands.
Road conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly Tuesday evening as snow intensifies. Travel could be very difficult, particularly along U.S. Highway 10, I-35, and regional routes near Brainerd and Pine City. Motorists should slow down, allow extra travel time, and carry emergency supplies.
Snow is expected to taper off by early Wednesday morning, but morning commutes could remain slick in areas where temperatures stay below freezing.
