Duluth, MN – A powerful winter storm continues to impact northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin, bringing heavy snowfall, strong winds, and blizzard conditions that are expected to persist into early Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, the heaviest snowfall rates will continue Sunday evening through early Monday morning, with additional accumulations pushing storm totals into the 8 to 18 inch range in parts of northwest Wisconsin. The highest totals are expected near Hurley, Phillips, Ashland, and Iron County, where snowfall could exceed a foot.

In northeastern Minnesota, including Duluth, Two Harbors, Silver Bay, and Grand Marais, snowfall totals of 1 to 6 inches are expected, though impacts will be amplified by northwest winds gusting 30 to 50 mph. These winds are creating dangerous blowing and drifting snow, especially along the Lake Superior South Shore, where blizzard warnings remain in effect.

The NWS warns that travel conditions may become life-threatening, with near-zero visibility at times. Snow is expected to end from west to east Monday morning, lingering the longest into early Monday afternoon across northern Iron and Ashland counties.

Even after snowfall ends, blustery winds will continue, leading to ongoing drifting snow and reduced visibility. Forecasters also warn of dangerously cold wind chills, potentially dropping to -20 degrees late Sunday night into Monday morning.

Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel, keep emergency kits in vehicles, and prepare for possible power outages due to high winds.

Winter storm warnings, blizzard warnings, and high wind warnings remain in effect across the region.
