Duluth, Minnesota – Drivers across northern Minnesota and parts of northern Wisconsin faced slick and hazardous travel early Tuesday as mixed precipitation brought light snow and freezing drizzle to the region, creating icy roads during the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect through early Tuesday morning for much of northeastern Minnesota, including Duluth, Hibbing, Ely, Two Harbors, International Falls, and Grand Marais. Additional snow accumulations up to one inch are expected, along with a light glaze of ice, particularly on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.

The advisory also covers Pine County in Minnesota and several counties in northern Wisconsin, including Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland, Burnett, Washburn, Sawyer, and Price counties. Communities such as Superior, Hayward, Spooner, Bayfield, and Ashland may see slippery travel conditions through mid-morning as temperatures hover near freezing.

Farther east in Wisconsin, Iron County remains under an advisory into Wednesday morning. That area could see additional snow accumulations between 1 and 3 inches along with ice buildup near one-tenth of an inch, increasing the risk for prolonged slick conditions.

Road conditions may change quickly over short distances, especially near Lake Superior and across higher terrain. Even minor snow and ice amounts can significantly reduce traction, making early travel challenging.

Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and use caution, especially during the morning commute. Pedestrians should also be alert for icy sidewalks and steps.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Tuesday as temperatures rise, though shaded and untreated surfaces may remain slick longer. Additional advisories could be issued if icy conditions linger or expand across the Northland.
