DULUTH, Minn. – Much of northern Minnesota is under a Freeze Watch through Wednesday morning as temperatures are expected to drop into the mid-20s overnight, threatening crops and gardens across the region. Residents from International Falls to Lake Vermilion could wake to widespread frost and frozen vegetation by early Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, the advisory covers Koochiching, North Itasca, and northern St. Louis counties, including the Bois Forte Band Tribal Lands and Voyageurs National Park. The Freeze Watch begins late Tuesday and extends through Wednesday morning, with a Frost Advisory already in effect overnight Monday.
Cold air settling into the region could kill unprotected plants and damage sensitive outdoor plumbing. Officials urge residents to bring potted plants indoors and cover any tender vegetation tonight to prevent freeze damage.
The freeze marks one of the coldest starts to October so far, signaling an early end to the growing season for much of the Northland. Additional frost advisories may be issued if cold air persists through midweek.
Warnings remain in effect through Wednesday morning.
