Minnesota greets the morning with a sharp, metallic cold along the North Shore, where exhaust hangs low and tires hiss across dry pavement that won’t stay dry for long. Light snow begins to creep in from the west, barely visible at first, but enough to change road conditions quickly.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a clipper system will spread light snow across northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin through tonight. Accumulations generally range from 1 to 2 inches, but even minor snowfall may create slippery travel by early morning, especially on untreated roads.

Duluth starts the day near 18 degrees under sunshine, but conditions deteriorate later as clouds thicken. Snow develops this evening with visibility reductions possible along I-35, U.S. 53, and Highway 61. Gusts near 20 mph may cause brief blowing snow, particularly near open stretches by Lake Superior.

Wind chills remain a concern. Early readings sit well below zero, and tonight’s lows dip near 9 degrees. Snow-covered pavement combined with bitter air increases the risk of flash freezing after plows pass. Drivers should slow down, increase following distance, and plan extra time.

Snow lingers into Sunday morning before tapering off. Highs rebound into the mid-20s, but roads may stay slick through midday. Side streets and parking lots could remain icy, especially where snow compacts overnight.

The broader pattern stays cold into early February. Monday and Tuesday remain mostly dry but chilly, with highs near 20 degrees and overnight lows near zero. A modest warmup develops by midweek, with highs climbing into the 30s and additional snow chances returning late week.

Residents are encouraged to monitor changing road conditions and report snowfall totals to the National Weather Service if possible. Heading out later today or tonight? What are road conditions like where you are?
