St. Paul, Minnesota – Early Friday morning, powerful storms are expected to sweep into western and northern Minnesota, threatening damaging winds and possible large hail from around 3 a.m. through 9 a.m. According to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities, severe thunderstorms will first arrive in western Minnesota between 3 and 4 a.m., then push east through St. Cloud and the Twin Cities during the morning commute.
Cities including Fergus Falls, Morris, Willmar, and Montevideo are at greatest risk for wind gusts topping 70 mph—strong enough to down trees and power lines, especially west of the Twin Cities. Gusts up to 60 mph are possible further east. Large hail is also a concern, mainly in west-central areas before storms gradually weaken heading east. Residents along I-94, Highway 12, and Highway 59 should expect sudden changes in driving conditions and possible road debris.
Forecasters urge everyone to keep phones charged and enable weather alerts overnight, as many warnings could come before dawn. Secure loose outdoor items and avoid non-essential travel during the peak threat window.
Severe thunderstorm watches or warnings may be issued quickly as storms approach. Another round of severe weather is possible late Friday into Saturday.
