Minneapolis, MN – As cold air sweeps toward the Upper Midwest, federal officials are warning homeowners in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota to winterize their homes now before the first deep freeze arrives.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says that early-season Arctic air could push into the region soon, bringing overnight lows well below freezing and increasing risks of frozen pipes, furnace failures, and ice buildup.

To prepare, NOAA recommends residents take the following steps:

  • Inspect and service furnaces and chimneys to ensure safe operation.
  • Clean gutters and downspouts to prevent ice dams and roof damage.
  • Insulate exposed pipes and attics to prevent freezing and heat loss.
  • Seal drafts by caulking and weather-stripping windows and doors.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, replacing batteries if needed.
  • Stock emergency kits with blankets, flashlights, food, and water.

NOAA officials also remind residents to check on elderly neighbors and those living alone, who may need extra assistance as temperatures drop.

Forecasters expect the Upper Midwest to experience a colder-than-average start to November, with some areas already seeing morning frost and wind chills dipping into the 20s.
