The National Weather Service in La Crosse warns that a heightened fire danger will develop this afternoon across northeast Iowa, southeast Minnesota, and southwest Wisconsin, where strong southerly winds and low humidity will dry fuels quickly.
Afternoon humidity levels are expected to drop to 25–30%, while south winds of 15–20 mph gust up to 35 mph. That combination means even a single spark could ignite fast-spreading flames in fields, woodlands, or roadside ditches. Areas including Decorah, Rochester, La Crosse, Winona, and Platteville are all under an elevated fire weather statement through the early evening.

Despite cooler mornings, the recent stretch of dry weather has left grasses and leaves brittle. Winds will remain steady into the afternoon before easing toward sunset, but humidity will not recover quickly, meaning fire danger lingers into early evening.
Looking ahead, a weak system may bring scattered light rain Friday night, offering minor relief. However, dry and breezy conditions could return by Sunday, keeping the fire risk elevated into early next week across portions of the Driftless Region and Mississippi River Valley.
