Duluth, Minnesota – Dangerous heat will grip parts of northern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin Friday afternoon, with heat index values climbing toward 100 degrees and a significant threat of heat-related illness for residents and visitors. According to the National Weather Service, an Extreme Heat Watch is now in effect from Friday afternoon through Friday evening for Pine County in Minnesota and Ashland, Bayfield, Burnett, Sawyer, and Washburn counties in Wisconsin, including the Bad River, Red Cliff, St. Croix, Lac Courte Oreilles, and Mille Lacs Band Tribal Lands.
Cities like Hayward, Hinckley, Washburn, Spooner, and popular spots along the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and Madeline Island will see oppressive humidity and soaring temperatures. Emergency officials urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activity during peak heat, and use air conditioning whenever possible. Vulnerable groups—including children, seniors, and those without reliable cooling—should be checked on frequently. Those planning to attend outdoor events or visit local lakes should watch for symptoms of heat exhaustion such as dizziness and rapid pulse.
The heat threat is expected to last into Friday evening, with additional watches or warnings possible if high temperatures persist. Stay tuned for updates as the National Weather Service tracks conditions.
