MINNESOTA – The air feels sharp this morning across the Twin Cities, with a gray sky and temperatures stuck near 16°F. The calm will soon give way to an active stretch of winter weather, as snow chances rise Friday and Arctic air floods the region through the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, light snow is expected Friday, mainly south of Interstate 94 and west of I-35, with up to two inches possible in southwestern Minnesota. Gusty northwest winds will follow, driving wind chills below -20°F by early Sunday.

While Friday’s snow totals will stay light, the flash freeze potential is high. Wet roads could quickly refreeze as temperatures plummet from the upper teens Friday morning to single digits by evening. Drivers along I-35, Highway 169, and U.S. 212 should plan for slick patches and limited visibility during the commute.

Saturday remains bitterly cold with highs near 2°F and lows diving below -15°F, setting up a dangerously frigid Sunday morning across the metro and western Wisconsin. Frostbite could develop in under 15 minutes if skin is exposed.

5-Day Outlook (Dec. 11–15):

  • Sunday: Mostly sunny, high 6°F, low -1°F.
