Duluth, MN – Northeastern Minnesota faces a significant winter storm this weekend, with up to 8 inches of snow expected in the Arrowhead region by Monday. A mix of snow, ice, and freezing rain will create hazardous travel conditions across the region, particularly near the North Shore.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, snow will begin Friday night and intensify Saturday morning. Light accumulations of up to 3 inches are possible by Saturday afternoon, with ice glazing up to 0.1 inches in some areas, including Cook and Lake counties. Snowfall will transition to a wintry mix Sunday afternoon, creating slippery roadways along major routes such as U.S. 2 and Highway 61.
A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Cook County, where higher elevations could see totals exceeding 8 inches. Winds gusting up to 40 mph along the North Shore may lead to broken tree limbs and isolated power outages. Travelers are urged to plan ahead and monitor conditions closely.
The storm is expected to taper off late Monday, though lake-effect snow could linger into Tuesday along the South Shore. Temperatures will drop into the low 20s throughout the weekend, creating icy conditions overnight.
Looking ahead, Minnesota will see continued cold temperatures next week, with highs in the mid-20s and chances for scattered snow showers through Wednesday. Residents are advised to prepare for prolonged winter weather and check local forecasts for updates.
