Minneapolis, MN – A strong winter storm continues to sweep across Minnesota and parts of northwest Wisconsin tonight, prompting multiple Winter Storm Warnings through early Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service in Chanhassen warns that snowfall rates exceeding one inch per hour combined with northwest winds gusting up to 50 mph could create whiteout conditions across the region.
According to the National Weather Service, 2 to 4 inches of snow are expected across southern Minnesota — including Dakota, Ramsey, and Washington counties — while central areas such as St. Cloud, Willmar, and Cambridge may see 4 to 7 inches by daybreak. Winds this strong could also bring down tree branches and cause areas of blowing and drifting snow, significantly reducing visibility.
Communities across Mankato, New Ulm, Faribault, Owatonna, and western Wisconsin’s St. Croix County are under the same advisory, with the Wednesday morning commute expected to be treacherous. Officials urge drivers to avoid unnecessary travel and to keep emergency kits, food, and water in vehicles.
Drivers are advised to check 511mn.org for Minnesota road updates and 511wi.gov for Wisconsin conditions before heading out.
