Minneapolis, MN – A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for much of central and southern Minnesota through Wednesday morning, as a powerful system brings heavy snow, strong winds, and near-blizzard conditions during one of the busiest Thanksgiving travel periods of the year.

According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, rain will turn to snow from west to east this afternoon and evening, spreading across the Twin Cities, St. Cloud, Alexandria, and Mankato. The warning covers a wide area including Stearns, Kandiyohi, Hennepin, Dakota, Wright, Sherburne, and McLeod counties, among others.

Snowfall totals will range from 2 to 7 inches, with heaviest amounts near St. Cloud and central Minnesota. Forecasters warn of snowfall rates over one inch per hour and northwest wind gusts up to 45 mph, which could lead to whiteout conditions and visibility below one-quarter mile.

The Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes are expected to be particularly hazardous, with icy roads, drifting snow, and possible downed branches. Even areas expecting lighter snow totals could face dangerous travel due to strong winds and slick highways.

Motorists are urged to delay nonessential travel and check 511mn.org for the latest road conditions. If travel is unavoidable, officials recommend carrying emergency supplies—including food, water, and flashlights—and allowing extra time to reach destinations.

Conditions are expected to improve late Wednesday morning as snow tapers off, but gusty winds and drifting snow may continue through the afternoon.
