Eau Claire, WI – A powerful winter storm is set to bring heavy snow and strong winds to parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin on Wednesday, with blizzard conditions expected in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service, snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour will develop Wednesday morning, lasting into the early afternoon. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Eau Claire and Pepin counties from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with total snow accumulations ranging from 2 to 7 inches. The heaviest snowfall is expected in the southeastern portion of the region.

Winds of 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph along I-90, will create widespread blowing snow and significantly reduce visibility. Travel conditions are expected to be hazardous, particularly during the morning and evening commutes.

Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for potential whiteout conditions. If travel is necessary, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation recommends carrying emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water. Road condition updates can be found at 511wi.gov.
