Owatonna, MN – A powerful winter storm is set to bring blizzard conditions to southern Minnesota on Wednesday, with heavy snowfall and strong winds creating treacherous travel conditions. A Blizzard Warning is in effect from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT for Faribault, Freeborn, Martin, Steele, and Waseca counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Twin Cities/Chanhassen, snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour will develop Wednesday morning and persist into the afternoon. Total snow accumulations are expected to range between 4 and 8 inches. Meanwhile, northwest winds of 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, will lead to widespread blowing snow and significantly reduced visibility.

The hazardous conditions will impact the Wednesday morning and evening commutes, particularly along Interstate 90. Officials warn that whiteout conditions could make travel life-threatening. Motorists are urged to limit travel to emergencies only and carry a winter survival kit in their vehicles.

The storm has prompted adjustments to prior warnings, with central Minnesota counties seeing reduced snowfall totals. However, areas to the south and east remain at high risk for severe winter weather. Travelers can check updated road conditions by calling 511 or visiting 511mn.org.
