Minneapolis, Minn. – Powerful east winds are slamming into Minnesota Monday, whipping across the state with gusts nearing 50 mph and creating hazardous conditions for drivers and utility crews.
According to the National Weather Service, multiple wind advisories are in effect across central, southern, and northeastern Minnesota through late Monday night. Most areas — including Mankato, St. Cloud, and the Twin Cities — are under advisories until 8 p.m., while Duluth and parts of the North Shore will see the winds persist through 1 a.m. Tuesday.
In cities like Alexandria, Willmar, and New Ulm, wind gusts have already reached 40 to 45 mph. Near Lake Superior, forecasters warn that gusts may locally exceed 50 mph, especially along exposed shoreline areas. The combination of strong winds and loose debris could bring down tree limbs and power lines, with sporadic outages possible into the evening.
Drivers on I-94, US-14, and MN-60 should use extra caution, especially those in high-profile vehicles. Outdoor furniture, grills, and trampolines should be secured immediately.
This wind event follows a broader low-pressure system moving across the Upper Midwest. A calmer pattern is expected by Tuesday morning, but residents are urged to check for new advisories tonight.
