Duluth, Minn. – Strong thunderstorms could rumble across northeast Minnesota Friday, bringing the risk of damaging winds, hail, and heavy rain to communities across the Arrowhead. The National Weather Service in Duluth warns the severe threat will be most pronounced through this evening, especially in Koochiching, St. Louis, Cook, Lake, and Itasca counties.

According to the National Weather Service, conditions are expected to turn breezy Saturday with partly sunny skies, though temperatures will run several degrees cooler. By Sunday night into Monday, a sharp dip in temperatures will create the potential for frost across inland areas away from Lake Superior. Overnight lows could fall into the upper 30s in rural spots, a notable change for late August.

In Duluth, highs are expected to reach the upper 70s Friday before dipping into the upper 60s through the weekend. Residents in Ely, Hibbing, and Grand Rapids should prepare for cooler nights, with patchy frost possible by early Tuesday morning.

Travelers are urged to stay alert for rapidly changing conditions during storms and to secure outdoor items ahead of gusty winds. Those in frost-prone areas should plan to cover sensitive vegetation Monday night. Additional advisories may be issued if frost becomes more widespread.
