Minneapolis, Minnesota – Thunderstorms, flooding rain, and wildfire smoke will grip Minnesota through Friday, sparking travel delays and public health concerns.
According to the National Weather Service, a line of thunderstorms is expected to develop Friday afternoon across central and southern Minnesota. This includes the I-94 corridor from St. Cloud through the Twin Cities and southeast toward Rochester. Rainfall totals could exceed 3 inches in some areas, raising flash flood risks, especially in low-lying or poorly drained areas.
At the same time, an Air Quality Alert remains in effect until 11 p.m. Thursday due to Canadian wildfire smoke. Sensitive groups — including those with asthma, heart disease, children, and seniors — should avoid prolonged outdoor exertion. Residents are urged to close windows overnight and limit time outside Friday morning if smoke lingers.
Friday afternoon will bring a 60% chance of thunderstorms, followed by a very active stretch through midweek. Thunderstorms are likely again Saturday, with heavy rain possible late into Sunday. With multiple storm systems in play, Father’s Day weekend could be soggy across much of the state.
Drivers should watch for water-covered roads and reduced visibility. Now is a good time to prepare for power outages, delays, and changing travel plans.
Warnings remain in effect through Friday morning, with more storms expected Saturday through Wednesday.
