Duluth, Minnesota – Up to 2 inches of rain could drench parts of northern Minnesota from Friday evening through Saturday afternoon, raising the risk of flash flooding across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, the heaviest rainfall is likely north of a line from Walker to the Twin Ports, including Brainerd, Ely, and International Falls. A Flood Watch may be issued Friday afternoon, with rainfall probabilities ranging from 60% to 80% across much of the northern tier.
Cities like Grand Rapids, Hibbing, and Duluth could see over an inch of rainfall, with localized totals topping 2 inches in areas experiencing repeated storms. This rainfall may arrive on already saturated ground from earlier summer showers, compounding flooding potential.
Travelers should prepare for water-covered roadways, especially near low-lying areas and creeks. Residents are urged to avoid driving through flooded roads, keep cell phones charged, and clear storm drains in advance. Rain chances begin rising Friday afternoon and peak overnight into early Saturday.
Confidence in the storm track and intensity remains moderate and will be refined after Friday’s initial rounds of storms.
Warnings may be issued Friday afternoon as models gain clarity on storm placement.
