Minneapolis, MN – Drivers across the Twin Cities could face dangerous travel conditions today as strong winds, falling snow, and a rapid temperature drop combine to create icy roads and blowing snow during the morning and evening commutes.
According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through 9 p.m. today for much of central and southern Minnesota, including Minneapolis and St. Paul. Northwest winds gusting between 40 and 50 mph will usher in sharply colder air behind an Arctic front. Light snow is expected, with accumulations generally under an inch, but visibility may drop quickly in brief snow squalls.
Temperatures are forecast to fall rapidly into the teens and single digits by evening, creating a flash freeze risk on untreated roads. Any lingering moisture could quickly turn icy, especially on bridges, ramps, and secondary roads. A Wind Advisory is also in effect through this evening, with gusty conditions making travel difficult for high-profile vehicles on I-94, I-35, and Highway 52.
Conditions gradually improve overnight as winds ease and snow tapers off. Friday stays cold and breezy, but with fewer travel hazards. The weekend remains quiet but chilly.
Looking ahead, the pattern moderates early next week. Christmas Eve on Wednesday is currently trending calmer and dry in the Twin Cities, with lighter winds and improving travel conditions expected. While winter impacts dominate today, a quieter holiday setup appears increasingly likely by midweek.
