DULUTH, Minn. – After a blustery Columbus Day weekend, calmer skies are finally in sight for the Northland as fall temperatures return by Tuesday. Strong south winds gusting up to 40 mph Sunday and Monday will ease as a cold front sweeps through, ushering in cooler, more seasonable air.

According to the National Weather Service office in Duluth, gusty conditions will persist through Monday afternoon, particularly along the North Shore and I-35 corridor. Drivers should use caution on exposed highways, especially those traveling with trailers or high-profile vehicles. Boaters on Lake Superior are advised to remain docked until winds subside late Monday.

The front’s passage will bring sharply cooler air Monday night into Tuesday, with highs dropping into the 50s and lows dipping into the 30s. The NWS notes a limited frost potential by midweek in rural valleys, signaling the first hint of the season’s chill. Families returning to school after the Columbus Day holiday should dress in layers and expect brisk morning bus stops.

By Wednesday, high pressure builds in, bringing bright skies ideal for leaf-viewing drives along Highway 61 and pumpkin patch visits. Warmer temperatures return by Thursday, but another round of showers could develop by Friday. Residents planning outdoor decorations or fall yardwork should take advantage of the sunny midweek window before rain chances rise again.
