Duluth, MN – Dangerous wind chills and subzero temperatures are forecast to dominate the Northland this week, raising concerns about frostbite risks and travel safety. Residents should prepare for lows dropping below -20°F and wind chills near -30°F or colder through early Wednesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, tonight’s low will fall to -2°F, with wind chills making it feel like -17°F. By Wednesday morning, temperatures will plunge to near -20°F in some areas, with gusts up to 20 mph intensifying the cold. A warming trend is expected later in the week, with highs reaching the mid-30s by Friday, but another Arctic blast is likely by Sunday.

Motorists on regional highways, including I-35, should exercise caution as icy patches and blowing snow may develop during overnight hours. Pedestrians are urged to limit outdoor exposure and cover all exposed skin to avoid frostbite, which can occur in minutes under these conditions.

Lake-effect snow will continue impacting parts of northern Wisconsin and northeast Minnesota today, with light accumulations expected. Although snowfall will taper off Wednesday, bitter cold remains a primary hazard. Residents should check on vulnerable neighbors and ensure pets are brought indoors.

Looking ahead, Friday offers a brief reprieve with milder conditions in the 30s. However, forecasters caution that Sunday into early next week will bring wind chills back to dangerous levels, potentially triggering additional advisories.
