Marshall, MN – Strong winds and heavy snow are making travel hazardous across southwest Minnesota tonight, as a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 3 a.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls.
The warning covers Lincoln, Lyon, Murray, and Cottonwood counties, including the cities of Marshall, Windom, Hendricks, Tyler, and Slayton. Forecasters report 1 to 4 inches of snow with winds gusting up to 60 mph, creating blowing snow and near-whiteout conditions at times.
According to the National Weather Service, visibility may drop below one-quarter mile, especially in open and rural areas. The combination of strong winds and fresh snowfall could lead to drifting and slick roads across Highways 14, 19, and 59, with the most dangerous travel conditions occurring through late Tuesday evening.
Officials warn that the storm could impact the Tuesday evening commute, and that tree damage and scattered power outages are possible due to the intense wind gusts. Motorists are advised to use extreme caution or delay travel until conditions improve Wednesday morning.
Residents are urged to keep a flashlight, food, and water in their vehicles in case of emergency. Those who must drive should check 511mn.org for real-time updates on road closures and travel conditions.
This quick-moving system is expected to move out of the region by early Wednesday, leaving behind colder temperatures and lingering blowing snow into the morning hours.
