A dangerously cold air mass will grip northern Minnesota and parts of Wisconsin from late Monday night into Tuesday morning, with wind chills expected to plunge as low as -40°F.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Cold Weather Advisory will be in effect from 10 p.m. Monday to 11 a.m. Tuesday for multiple counties, including Koochiching, St. Louis, Cass, Itasca, and Cook. The advisory also extends to parts of Wisconsin, including Douglas, Burnett, and Washburn counties.

Wind chills between -35°F and -40°F could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes. Forecast lows range from -20°F to -30°F, making outdoor conditions extremely dangerous.

Residents should dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and avoid prolonged outdoor exposure. If travel is necessary, carrying emergency supplies, such as blankets and extra clothing, is recommended.

This extreme cold will impact areas including Voyageurs National Park, the Boundary Waters, Duluth, Grand Rapids, and Superior, WI. Tribal lands, including the Bois Forte Band, Fond du Lac Band, and Grand Portage Reservation, are also affected.
