Minnesota Weather Alert: Wind Chills of -45°F Expected Overnight in Duluth and Northern Counties

Duluth, MN – Extreme cold is set to grip northern Minnesota overnight, with wind chills dropping as low as -45°F. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Duluth has issued an Extreme Cold Warning from midnight Monday until 10 a.m. CST Tuesday.

According to the NWS, the warning covers Crow Wing, Aitkin, Pine, Koochiching, Cass, Itasca, Carlton, St. Louis, Cook, and Lake Counties, including cities such as Duluth, Brainerd, Hibbing, and Grand Marais. Tribal lands, Voyageurs National Park, and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area are also affected.

Frostbite can occur within 10 minutes on exposed skin at these temperatures. Residents are urged to dress in layers, cover all exposed skin, and limit time outdoors. If travel is necessary, carrying an emergency winter survival kit is advised.

A similar warning is in effect for northwestern Wisconsin, including Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland, and Sawyer Counties, where wind chills could reach -42°F.
