St. Cloud, MN – An extreme cold watch has been issued across central Minnesota, with dangerously low wind chills expected from late Sunday night through Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Twin Cities/Chanhassen, wind chills could reach as low as -43°F in Benton, Kandiyohi, Morrison, Stearns, Mille Lacs, and surrounding counties during this period. Frostbite can occur in as little as 10 minutes on exposed skin at these temperatures.
Residents in St. Cloud, Willmar, Alexandria, and nearby areas are urged to take precautions, including wearing multiple layers, face masks, and gloves if venturing outside. The extreme cold is also expected to return late Monday night and Tuesday night, increasing the risk of hypothermia and frostbite.
Authorities advise staying indoors as much as possible, ensuring pets are sheltered, and checking on vulnerable neighbors. Travel may be hazardous due to ice and extreme temperatures, so prepare emergency kits for vehicles if travel is necessary.
