Minnesota wakes to a pale gray sky, light snow drifting across open fields, and a sharp edge already noticeable in the air. The setup today is only the beginning, as colder and more dangerous winter weather tightens its grip heading into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities, a round of light snow moves through parts of central and southern Minnesota today, with one to two inches possible along and south of I-90. Roads may turn slick during bursts of snow, especially during the daytime commute. Another light round is possible later, keeping untreated surfaces slippery.
Temperatures fall steadily as the week progresses. While today’s highs reach the low 20s, colder air presses in behind the snow. Gusty winds will create patchy blowing snow at times, reducing visibility on rural roads and exposed highways.
Thursday brings a brief lull in snowfall but not in cold. Skies turn brighter, yet temperatures struggle, with highs only near the single digits. Winds increase again, making it feel much colder than the numbers suggest.
By Friday, the Arctic blast arrives. Highs hover below zero, and wind chills plunge toward 40 below in parts of southern and central Minnesota. Frostbite on exposed skin may occur in as little as 10 minutes. Outdoor activity should be limited, and pets should remain indoors.
Saturday stays brutally cold. Even with sunshine, highs remain below zero. Any light snow from earlier melts very little, and refreezing will keep roads slick.
Looking ahead, the 6–10 day outlook keeps Minnesota locked in below-normal temperatures, with additional snow chances returning next week.
