Minnesota – The cold bites instantly, the kind that stings exposed skin and steals breath with every step. Arctic air has settled firmly across northeast Minnesota, bringing some of the coldest wind chills of the season.
A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect for Duluth and much of northeastern Minnesota through Sunday morning. According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, wind chills have plunged to 35 to 40 degrees below zero in spots, creating dangerous conditions for anyone outdoors. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.
Temperatures today struggle to climb, with highs hovering near -3 degrees. Northwest winds continue to gust, keeping wind chills locked between -25 and -35 degrees through the day. Travel remains possible, but drivers should prepare for vehicles that are slow to start and limited visibility from blowing snow in open areas.
Conditions turn even colder tonight as temperatures drop near -20 degrees. Wind chills stay extreme, especially outside the city and near higher terrain. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, wear insulated layers, and cover all exposed skin. Check on neighbors, especially the elderly, and ensure pets are kept indoors.
Sunday offers little immediate relief. Sunshine returns, but highs only reach about 7 degrees, and brisk winds keep it feeling much colder. Sunday night remains frigid before a gradual improvement begins early next week.
By Monday, highs rebound into the mid-20s, marking the start of a noticeable warm-up. Temperatures climb further Tuesday and Wednesday, eventually pushing into the 40s, a dramatic December swing that may bring slushy roads during the daytime and refreezing at night.
Winter has fully arrived in northern Minnesota. Conditions remain dangerous through Sunday morning.
