MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Severe weather is expected to sweep across Minnesota through Monday, bringing the threat of heavy rain, localized flooding, and damaging storms to much of the state. Travel and outdoor plans could be impacted as conditions worsen, particularly in the Twin Cities and surrounding counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, thunderstorms are likely to intensify Sunday afternoon and evening, with the potential to turn severe. Wind gusts and torrential downpours could create hazardous driving conditions on interstates including I-35, I-94, and Highway 52. A 40 percent chance of storms lingers into Monday before calmer weather returns later in the week.
Localized flooding is possible in low-lying and urban areas, especially where rain falls in quick bursts. Emergency officials advise residents to avoid driving through water-covered roads and to keep phones and weather radios charged in case of power outages. SKYWARN spotters may be activated Sunday to monitor developing storms.
While drier and calmer weather is expected to return by Tuesday, additional alerts could be issued if storms redevelop.
