Duluth, Minnesota – Storm chances will ramp up across northeastern Minnesota heading into the weekend, with thunderstorms likely Friday afternoon and evening in Duluth — prompting a summer weather alert for outdoor plans and regional travel on I-35.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, Thursday will stay dry and partly sunny with a high near 72°F. Showers and thunderstorms become more likely after 1 p.m. Friday, with an 80% chance of rain and localized downpours. Gusty southeast winds may reach 15 mph. Residents should be prepared for slick roads and potential brief power disruptions Friday afternoon through Friday night.

Areas including Hermantown, Cloquet, and along Highway 61 near the North Shore should remain alert for heavy rain bands. Friday night stays muggy with a low near 61°F and scattered thunderstorms continuing into early Saturday.

Saturday brings some clearing, but isolated showers remain possible during the afternoon, with highs returning to the upper 70s. If you’re heading to Bayfront Festival Park or hosting weekend outdoor events, have backup plans. Sunday turns hot and breezy — highs could reach 80°F, with a fresh round of afternoon storms expected.

Looking ahead to Monday, skies clear and temps climb to 78°F under sunny skies — ideal for travel or outdoor work. But rain chances return Monday night into Tuesday.

More thunderstorm updates are expected from the NWS by Friday morning. Stay weather-aware and monitor road conditions throughout the weekend.
