Duluth, Minn. – Severe storms are expected to develop across Minnesota on Tuesday, with the strongest activity likely late afternoon into the evening. Large hail up to the size of ping pong balls, gusty winds reaching 60 mph, and heavy rainfall could cause dangerous travel conditions, especially around the Brainerd Lakes region.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, storms will be scattered throughout the day but a few could intensify quickly. The agency warns of localized flooding from downpours, particularly in low-lying areas where rainfall may exceed a quarter inch in under an hour. The most severe storms are expected Tuesday afternoon and early evening before tapering overnight.
Cities most at risk include Duluth, Grand Rapids, and Brainerd, where road travel could be hazardous due to water pooling and reduced visibility. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items that could blow away in strong winds and to stay indoors during severe thunderstorm warnings. Power outages are possible in rural counties if trees or lines come down.
The unsettled pattern continues midweek as cooler air follows behind Tuesday’s front. Additional showers are possible by Thursday, with patchy frost a concern by Friday morning.
